Hello again
Got my laptop yesterday. I'm having a problem with my laptop internal speakers.
I want to use my headset, as the speakers suck bad. Unfortunately, when I plug it in, my internal speakers don't mute. I tried adjusting different settings in my control panel and driver software but nothing helped. A driver update didn't solve the problem. I know that the speakers should automatically mute when headphones are plugged in, but it doesn't work here. Is there a way to manually mute the speakers?
My laptop runs on Vista with Realtek HD audio.
This is really driving me nuts, I hope you can help me.

It would help if you told us the make and model# of the laptop.

My desktop has Realtek HD audio (atm). If I open the "Realtek HD Audio Manager" (in the systray), there is a little link in the upper right - Device advanced settings - and in there there is an option to mute the rear speaker jacks when headphones are plugged into the front jacks. Dig around in your laptop and see if there's a Manager somewhere and look closely to find an advanced settings option. (It's Windows after all, they can't make anything easy to find

My laptop: Medion MD98200

Medion is a german brand, so you probably haven't heard of it before. The laptop has pre-installed german OS.
I have a screenshot of the HD Audio controller with the advanced option on the upper right hand corner. The problem is, that there isn't anything about muting speakers in that menu. However, I CAN mute the sound, but it mutes the headphones aswell. I have tried both options in that menu but they didn't solve the problem.

It's german so ye it may be hard for you to understand.

Option 1: Connects the same type of inputs into one playback device (e.g. audio-in or mic)
Option 2: Separates all inputs into independent devices.

I hope I translated that right, but as I said, none of them options worked for me.

You could try to find a newer audio driver - maybe some generic driver from Realtek may have the option. Then again, maybe it just can't be done.

I've had this problem before on a completely different laptop. The solution I found was to play with the various volume controls in Windows Volume Control. Muting one of the channels muted the laptop speakers completely while still allowing the headphones.

Another potential solution is to check the jack you are plugging the headphones into. Some laptops have two jacks for sound. Try the other jack, and play around with windows volume control.

Sorry that I'm writing this a bit late. Had troubles replying (code page error, weird wall-o-text). Now it seems to work

I did update my drivers, I even tried the xp drivers (yes, it's sometimes possible to install xp drivers on vista) but nothing changed.

There's something funny in my volume controls. When I mute all other channels, nothing happens. But when I mute "front" it mutes BOTH the speakers and headphones.

The other jacks are for mic and optical-in (the plug doesn't fit anyway).

I already wrote an e-mail to customer support (2 days ago) and still no answer. Do you guys think my laptop is damaged?

The only possible solution is to unscrew and disconnect the speaker cables but I'm afraid of doing that. Ya know, I could break something.

I have found the solution!

If it weren't for my infinite dumbness I would have gotten rid of the problem a long time ago.

Last week I sent the laptop back to the retailer, but they said it was fine. I got it back yesterday and the problem still persisted. Speakers still kept playing with headset plugged in. In utter desperation I plugged the headset into the other black plug and guess what happened??? That's right.

Speakers turned off and only my headset played sound.
How stupid can one be?

So please lock/delete this thread.

Well, thanks for posting that anyway. It's so seldom that anyone posts to say they found the solution or that some suggestion worked. It's good to have "closure".
